Cristiano Ronaldo reveals international future plans after Slovenia scare –

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that Euro 2024 will be his last European Championship in a Portugal shirt.

Roberto Martinez’s side narrowly qualified for the quarter-finals on Monday after defeating Slovenia on penalties. Their victory means they will next face France, who beat Belgium 1-0 to also advance from the round of 16, on Friday in Hamburg.

Portugal captain Ronaldo was left disappointed with his performance however, missing four free-kicks and denying his side victory inside the allotted 120 minutes after missing a penalty in extra-time. He did convert from the spot in the shootout in which the Selecao won 3-0.

After the game, Ronaldo confirmed that Euro 2024 will be his last European Championship, with the Manchester United legend set to be 43 by the time of Euro 2028.

In an interview with Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Ronaldo said: “It is, without doubt, my last European Championship. But I’m not emotional about that.

“I’m moved by all that football means – by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm for seeing my supporters, my family, the affection people have for me. It’s not about leaving the world of football. What else is there for me to do or win?

“It’s not going to come down to one point more or one point less. Making people happy is what motivates me the most.”

Ronaldo remains the all-time record goal scorer in the European Championships, boasting 14 goals since his tournament debut in 2004. He will hope to end his Portugal career on a high, after last winning the competition in 2016.
