NHIS was not started by Kufuor – Zanetor Rawlings reveals –

The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has asserted that her party, the National Democratic Congress, has not done well in defending some of the policies they initiated.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV, on June 27, 2024, Zanetor said that the party has remained quiet while the NPP governments, including the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, take credit for projects started by NDC governments.

She cited the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which the John Agyekum Kufuor-led government has been praised for, as one of the projects started by the NDC which the NPP has been taking credit for.

According to her, the National Health Insurance Scheme was started by the government of her father, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, and was even piloted in some parts of the country.

“The NHIS that people keep attributing to the NPP was actually a brainchild of the NDC. It was actually piloted during the PNDC era. That is why I said perhaps as the NDC, we are not marketing ourselves well enough and speaking about what we have achieved well enough.

“I believe that it was through PNDC and into the NDC that we actually saw the expansion of electricity in this country,” she said.

The MP added, “A lot of the projects that the NPP has commissioned were actually started by the NDC, a lot of contracts that we have seen coming into fruition under the NPP were actually originally signed under the NDC.”
