The first mobile money services provided by universal and rural banks, savings, and loan companies to individuals and businesses launched in 2022, GhanaPay, has recorded significant progress.

Head of GhanaPay mobile money, Samuel Darko, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Accra said the product which was launched with about 40,000 subscribers currently has 2.5 million on its mobile money wallet.

“We are looking at close to 1 million subscribers on the platform to ensure people enjoy the added value of GhanaPay mobile money,” he said.

“We can say that we are making progress and with the introduction of the value added services, we think people will continue to use GhanaPay for their daily transactions,” he added.

He said the value-added services such as crowdfunding, and standing instructions sponsored wallet were all aimed at promoting financial inclusion as well as helping people make all forms of financial transactions at their convenience.

He said GhanaPay mobile money gives users the opportunity to have a direct relationship with a bank with unlimited banking services in addition to existing mobile services.

He said apart from the value-added services, it also performs all other functions including cash-in cash-out, paying a GhQR merchant, buying airtime and data, generating a token, paying bills, save among others.

He mentioned that efforts were also being made by his outfit to educate the merchant’s outlets, businesses, and individuals to hook up to the  GhanaPay mobile money as they continue to educate the public on the value proposition of using the services.

Achie Hesse, Chief Executive of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) said the platform offered more options for financial inclusion apart from the TELCOS that are known to provide mobile money services.

He said although most mobile money services are offered by the TELCOs in most countries, mobile money services in Ghana are offered by the Fintechs, as well as the TELCOs floating money on the same platform.

Mr. Hesse further stated that GhanaPay is one of the best platforms that ensures financial  inclusion for Ghanaians particularly as people could make all their transactions  with the banks although all the banks in Ghana were at different stages of  the services provided on the GhanaPay mobile money platform.
