Production on the upcoming live action How to Train Your Dragon film is currently underway!!
The new adaptation of the franchise sees writer and director Dean DeBlois returning to write and helm the film after directing the previous three animated movies.
Based on the books by Cressida Cowell, the first animated movie followed Hiccup, a young Viking who defies tradition and befriends one of his deadliest foes – a ferocious dragon he calls Toothless. Together, the unlikely heroes fight against the odds to save both their worlds in this wonderful, feel-good hit.
The movie kicked off filming back in January after strike-related delays, and as of early March, was still underway in Ireland.
Cressida even visited the set and teased, “Everyone is in for a TREAT!”
How to Train Your Dragon is currently slated for a June 13, 2025 release.
While we await more details, we do know who will be starring in the upcoming live action adaptation, including an original voice star from the animated trilogy and a recent addition!

Mason Thames as Hiccup
Mason has been cast in the leading role of Hiccup, the young Viking who defies tradition and befriends one of his deadliest foes – a ferocious dragon he calls Toothless.
In the original animated movies, he was voiced by Jay Baruchel.
Nico Parker as Astrid
Nico has been cast as Astrid Hofferson in the live action movie. Astrid is Hiccup’s love interest.
In the original animated movies, the character was voiced by America Ferrera
Gerard Butler as Stoik the Vast
Gerard will be reprising his role as Hiccup’s father, Stoik the Vast, who he voiced in the original animated films. So far, he is the only actor stepping back into their voice role to bring it to life.
Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch
Nick is the latest actor to sign on to the film, where he will bring Gobber the Belch to life. He is the trusted friend and adviser of Stoick.
In the original animated movies, Gobber was voiced by Craig Ferguson.

Julian Dennison as Fishlegs
Julian Dennison has been cast in the role of Fishlegs, who is Hiccup’s best friend.
In the original animated movies, Fishlegs was voiced by Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
Gabriel Howell as Snotlout
Gabriel Howell is joining the cast as Snotlout.
In the original animated movies, Snotlout was voiced by Jonah Hill.
“Who died and made you chief?” he wrote on Instagram after the news was announced.
Bronwyn James as Ruffnut
Bronwyn James joins the cast as Ruffnut, one half of the brother-sister duo!
In the original animated movies, Ruffnut was voiced by Kristen Wiig.
“LET’S GO!!!!!!!!!!! 🐉 #howtotrainyourdragon,” Bronwyn shared on Instagram.
Bronwyn will also be in the upcoming Wicked movies!
Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut
Harry Trevaldwyn has been cast to portray Tuffnut, one half of the brother-sister duo!
In the original animated movies, Tuffnut was voiced by TJ Miller.

Ruth Codd as Phlegma
Ruth Codd joins the cast to portray Phlegma, according to THR, who is a member of the Viking village.
In the original animated movies, Phlegma was voiced by Ashley Jensen.
