Akufo-Addo supports LGBTQI+; earlier position just pretence – Akandoh –

Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has said that the President of Ghana is a proponent for LGBTQI+.

According to him, the president’s position on LGBTQI+ was just a pretence because of the political implications should he say he agrees to same-sex marriage.

“I knew the president was against what we were doing, and he was only pretending to Ghanaians because of the political implications. On several occasions, some issues were in court that he signed. Even if he signs and the Supreme Court sits on it and changes come, they will be affected,” he said on Accra-based UTV.

“The President knows that he is leaving and so he does not want to sign this. He wants someone else to sign this bill. There are several political implications, and he does not want to be the one to address them by signing this bill,” he said.

“To me, I agree that the President is in support of same-sex marriage and LGBTQI+ activities,” Akndoh observed.

It could be remembered that a statement from the government in April 2018 indicated that the Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo government was against same-sex marriages.

“Indeed, the President remains focused on delivering on his mandate and improving the quality of lives of the Ghanaian people. It will therefore not be under his (Akufo-Addo’s) Presidency that same-sex marriage will be legalised in Ghana,” the statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin added.
