Help Yourselves And Stop Waiting on Government For Help- Akwaboah Tells Colleagues

Ghanaian highlife musician, Akwaboah has slapped sense into the minds of his colleague musicians and people in the showbiz industry.

This comes after actors, actresses, directors, producers, and musicians among industry players have on several occasions called on the government of Ghana to support them financially.

They claim the industry is ailing and needs financial support from the government.

According to them, funding everything by themselves makes it extremely difficult for them to reach the target they want.

On July 25, 2023, for instance, the Managing Director of MultiChioice Ghana, Alex Okyere divulged that the Ghana entertainment industry needed support from the government.

He called for the government’s assistance whilst speaking at the Graphic Forum themed, ” Future of Ghana Movie Industry, Bright or Bleak?”

Talented Kumawood actor, Bill Asamoah in March 2022 also pleaded with the Government to support them financially.

According to him, “If government should help out with a 2 million dollar funding we can get this thing done in no time”.

He added that the “Distribution system for movies keeps changing every day and now the world has gone more digital and technological. This, therefore, means that the traditional way of distribution of local movies in the country is fast losing its control of the market and is no longer as effective as it used to be; hence the need for a new system such as digital marketing and distribution”.

Recently, after the Black Stars exited the ongoing AFCON, Ghanaian musician, Lyrical Joe suggested that the money invested into football in Ghana should be used to support Ghanaian musicians.

Lyrical Joe, whilst speaking with Amansan Krakye on Property FM said “The amount that is spent by the government on football to sponsor all these things, the same amount is not spent by the government on music. Maybe the musicians themselves spend that amount on their music but the government doesn’t spend that colossal amount on us”.

Article Wan recently called for investors to help the Ghana industry become better than it is presently.

He stated that Nigerian musicians are not any better than Ghanaian musicians, but their ability to invest in their craft makes them seen as better than the Ghanaian musicians.

He said “Nigerians are dominating the Afrobeats market, and the truth is that Nigerians have massive investment, which has made their music very loud. We are doing our best, but we don’t have that level of investment”.

According to him, “Most of the Ghanaian artists fund their activities, so it is even difficult to compare the two countries”.

Speaking on Uncut with D-Black, Akwaboah has advised his colleagues to help themselves and stop waiting on the government for financial support.

According to him, Ghanaian musicians might have to wait forever if they do not find alternatives to make it themselves and continue waiting on the government for aid.

“What I can tell every musician out there is to find ways to get your things done instead of thinking that someone will do it for you”, he said.

“Because if you’re waiting for someone to get into government to sort out the showbiz industry or sort you out, you will wait forever,” he added.
