Why I won’t perform at National Theatre again- Kojo Antwi

Veteran Ghanaian musician Kojo Antwi has detailed some reasons why he decided to call a quit when it comes to hosting musical concerts or performances at the national theater.

The National Theater does not need much introduction to concertgoers as it has been used as a venue for many high-profile events, be they music, drama or any other kind of event.

One of the very big names who graced several events at the national theater is none other than Kojo Antwi who is considered by many music lovers to be one of the best in the history of Ghanaian music.

The National Theatre has been hosting Kojo Antwi’s annual concert that takes place every 24th of December since it started in 1991 and has left lots of memories for music fans who made themselves consistently available at the event each year.

However, we may not be able to see the legendary musician hold the mic and entertain us at a venue like the National theatre anymore as he announced his decision not to perform at the popular event center again.

According to him, he concluded and took the decision not to perform over there again when he realised the National Theatre had become a hall that couldn’t accommodate his growth and evolution at the time.

It was this reason that led him a few years ago to move his annual 24th concert to multiple venues, such as the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), Kempinski Hotel, Accra Mall and Labadi Beach Hotel.

Last year’s event was still moved away from the popular venue and took place at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), and that means for years in a row now, the National Theatre hasn’t hosted the famous Kojo Antwi December 24 concert.

The musician then took his time to explain his reason in an interview when he was asked why he wasn’t hosting his concert at the National theater anymore.

“The place has fallen short of a theatre…maintaining the place has become difficult for those who are handling the theatre… and me as an artist, I don’t belong to a hall…I realised that the place wasn’t helping me. But an artiste doesn’t belong to a hall… All the things I did there were about God”, Kojo Antwi stated

“As an artiste, sometimes you become half full of a glass, sometimes, you get to the top of the glass, and sometimes when your ideas get wider, you outgrow the container. And I got to that point where I felt that the place wasn’t helping me. “I did so many avant-garde things but an artiste doesn’t belong to a hall. I realised that the place wasn’t helping me so I had to move,” he stated
