The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, took his Running Mate antics to Kumasi as he appeared before the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs chaired by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu.
The Minister was spotted kneeling and showing what analysts say is “pretentious humility” to the Chiefs who make up the traditional council of the “kingmaker region”.
The former Deputy Minister who was elevated to full Minister claims to have gone to Kumasi to address the House on the Free SHS policy and its impact on the region.
He also claims to have been there to brief them on the model junior high schools under construction, STEM schools, WASSCE results under FSHS, National Standardised Test (NST), National Education Leadership Institute, Teacher Licensure Examination, the Academic Calendar, and others.
But those with Knowledge of the Minister’s antics say the visit masked another covert agenda.
Insiders say the Bosomtwe MP is fighting with all his arsenals to be considered as running mate to the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The MP who has previously been accused of being “chisel” by the youth of his Constituency hopes by securing the blessings of the Kumasi Traditional Council, his path to the NPP running mate will be smoother.
Using Chief Imam for Image Laundry
It will be recalled that a time Dr. Osei Adutwum was bogged down by alleged “chop chop” allegations regarding a Bank of Ghana contract, he quickly run to the National Chief Imam Sheikh Nuhu Sharubatu for cover.
The Minister who had then allegedly been unable to account for a US$2Million World Bank project paid what he called a “courtesy call” on the National Chief Imam as part of a supposed “working visit” to prominent and key personalities within the Ghanaian society.
The visit to the Chief Imam backfired after media reports exposed the Minister’s attempt to use the old man for a hidden image cleaning agenda.
The issues surrounding the World Bank project cash were later amicably resolved.
Beyond the world Bank cash, Dr. Adutwum was one who chaired the Entity Tender Committee that awarded a controversial Mathematical Sets contracts that was the subject of a National Security investigation and arrests.
The contract which had the Nigerian wife of Secretary to the President Nana Asante Bediatuo involved was revoked after the parties allegedly disagreed over the sharing of the money from the contract.
