Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a lecturer at the Central University, has appealed to government to increase the National Health Insurance Scheme premium from 8 cedis.
Dr. Otchere-Ankrah, speaking on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”, was alarmed that this is the amount paid per year to cushion the National Health Insurance Authority.
To him, paying 8 cedis is the reason why the insurance doesn’t cover some critical illnesses and also noted that it makes the work of the Authority difficult as they have to work with such meagre amount to cater for the health needs of people.
He charged the government to reconsider the premium, stressing “the health insurance money is too small; increase it”.
“Let’s be honest with ourselves. Eight (8) cedis, no! What can it do? Even if you have nothing and you to go the hospital, how much is consultation? Some places collect 50 and others 200…that 8 cedis should be increased to 20 or 50 cedis,” he added.
Dr. Otchere-Ankrah also appealed to government to rename the COVID-19 levy as a national health fund and use it complement the insurance scheme, particularly in footing the bills of patients on dialysis.
