Abena Gyamfua Ofori, Alberta Odura Quartey, and Hannah Segbefia, three Ghanaian PhD students in the United States, were engaged in a catastrophic vehicle collision that killed two and badly wounded one.
They were all students at Clemson University in South Carolina, where they were pursuing post-graduate studies.
On June 18, 2023, the three were traveling together when they were engaged in a horrific vehicle accident.
The deadly accident happened on Highway 11 at Elizabeth Drive in South Carolina, when two automobiles moving in opposite directions crashed head-on, killing Abena Ofori and Alberta Quartey.
Hannah Segbefia, the group’s third member, survived but is now in severe condition in the hospital, requiring many procedures.
Abena Gyamfua Ofori, 31, is a former Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology student who was enrolled in a postgraduate English program at Clemson.

Albert Odura Quartey, 23, was also a KNUST alum who served as a Teaching Assitant at the university after completion of her studies before joining Clemson University for a PhD in Electrical Engineering.
Hannah Segbefia, the group’s third survivor, is a former Wesley Girls High School student who moved to the United States in 2023 to seek a Ph.D. in Biochemistry.
Segbefia had shattered ribs, broken hands, and other serious health consequences as a result of the catastrophe. She has endured two surgery and will need more to repair a shattered hip and a damaged hand.
