The Ghana Mine Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has indicated that it will not back down on a series of planned demonstrations until three of its local executives are reinstated by Sunon Asogli Power Limited after they were unlawfully dismissed.
The Union said the three had their contracts terminated simply because they decided to join the Trades Union Congress which it said is against the labour laws of Ghana.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, the General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union, Abdul Moomin Gbana indicated that other companies will likely take cues from the unlawful dismissals and treat their members with impunity if they allow it to slide without insisting and pressuring Sonun Asogli to do the right thing.
“The only crime that the three committed to have their contracts terminated was because they joined the union and our position remains that the three be reinstated and that is non-negotiable.”
Mr. Gbana further accused Sonun Asogli of modern-day slavery due to the tactics with which it treats members of the union.
“You cannot use a simple position to terminate workers. Asogli is missing the fact and as far as we remain a trades union, we will not accept this position not to reinstate the three unlawfully dismissed persons. When an employee dresses up for work and turns up at work only for you to hand a termination letter to him, that is servitude.”
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) embarked on a demonstration on Tuesday, May 9 to demand the reinstatement of the three executives.
