Is It Really Safe To Consume Wele?

Cattle hide is of great importance to shoe makers in the country since it is their source of leather. Deny most shoe makers a cattle hide, and they will have absolutely no raw material to start their shoe with.

Many countries around the globe have relied on the fashion aspect of the cattle hide but in Ghana, there is another value given to it. Aside the fashion aspect, it is of great importance when it comes to nutrition. It is funny as to how we consume leather without thinking about it harming us.

Popularly known in Ghana as “Wele” and Nigeria as “Ponmo” comes the cattle hide. Well, looking at it uncooked might diminish your zeal towards consuming it but once it gets cooked, nothing will stop you from trying it once you have strong teeth.

Many people think it has no nutritional value but dieticians are saying it is all lies. These cattle skin have nutritional values but they are very minute as compared to other protein sources. They contain collagen, which is important in bone and tissue formation.

The question many people ask about this meat is if it is really safe. Trust me, nothing will happen to you if you eat these cattle hides. Our grandparents never died after chewing them and therefore, let nobody discourage you from enjoying them. The only thing you have to know is, it requires strong teeth and isn’t going to give you the needed nutrients.
