The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa has served a notice that teachers of GES are required to pay for workshops and trainings organized for them.
Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa made this publicly known in an interview he granted on United Television’s Mpu Ne Mpu show on July 22, 2022.
According to the Director-General, the various teacher unions in Ghana negotiated for Teacher Professional Development Allowance which has been granted.
This allowance, which is paid every year on November, is distributed as follows:
1. One thousand, two hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 1,200) only for Professional teachers
2. Eight hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 800) only for Non-professional teachers.
Explaining further, Prof. Opoku-Amankwa indicated that this money is to be used for such trainings and workshops that will be organized by GES or any accredited trainer. These trainings and workshops are to serve as a means for advanced learning as teachers remain in the Service, so that they can build on their already acquired knowledge.
The GES Director General likened these workshops and trainings to other professionals such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana who also pay for such trainings in order to upgrade themselves in the profession.
