Today has been a memorable day for the people of Ghana. The country marked the commemorative holiday of Republic Day. Again the Ministry of Information released a statement on Ghana going to the International Monetary Fund for assistance as Ghana’s economy continues to dwindle. It can be recalled that Gabby Otchere Darko was one of the first public figures of the ruling NPP to have mentioned this decision to seek IMF assistance.
On Asaase FM’s Town hall Talk tonight July 1, 2022 with Kofi Abotsi, the reporter interviewed Gabby Otchere on his view regarding the government going to the IMF. According to Gabby, it is a great decision and all Ghanaians should be assured that things will get better. Kofi Abotsi proceeded to ask him if he has regrets for blaming John Mahama for going to the IMF in 2015. Gabby noted that he has no regrets because the conditions in the country during the Mahama led NDC is different to Akufo-Addo’s NPP.
“The situations are not the same. We have been soft on the NDC. We had a new source of revenue which was oil. The government lost grips of the economy. I don’t think we are as bad as the NDC then. They had no Covid and war then. The problems were homegrown. How would Mahama and the NDC have handled this if they were in power? Gabby queried. According to Gabby, the situation of Ghana currently is not as bad as where the NDC in 2015 placed Ghana.
