John Mahama has raised eyebrows after he posted a Republic Day message to Ghanaians on his Facebook wall. It can be recalled that the day was scrapped sometime in 2019 after President Akufo-Addo came to power. Akufo-Addo rather chose to make August 4 to mark Founders Day and revoked the article granting July 1 as a statutory holiday to a commemorative one.
Many were not pleased with this revocation, especially those of the opposition National Democratic Congress. In the post John Mahama noted that Ghana’s forbearers will be sad seeing where the country has been led to by the Akufo-Addo government. He bemoaned the socio-economic hardships and called the government to do better. He noted how Kwame Nkrumah fought to gain self-independence for Ghana.
The former president called on leaders to set their priorities right and alleviate the hardships that Ghanaians have been made to go through. This post has received massive reactions with many referring to John as a visionary leader. Others called on him to come to power and change their lives. Check out some of the reactions.
Should the day be made a statutory holiday again?
