AshantiGold striker Yaw Annor has emerged Goal King for 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season. The former Bechem United winger ended the season with 22 goals after bagging brace against debutants Bibiani Gold Stars at the Duns Park this afternoon. Yaw Annor equals Ishmael Addo’s 22 goals record in a single Ghana Premier League season, which has been in existence since 2002.
2021/22 Goal King race has been fiercely contested between Yaw Annor and Frank Etouga of Ashantigold and Asante Kotoko respectively. Cameroonian international Frank Etouga became a strong contender having led the race for several weeks. Frank Etouga following his debut appearance fought above the ordinary to become a favorite starter, and later adde goals to his personal accomplishments. His goal scoring prowess came under public scrutiny after assuming the role of first penalty taker for Asante Kotoko. Frank Etouga’s individual effort was acknowledged as he received a call up from head coach of Cameroon Senior National team, he was later dropped when the squad was trimmed down. That could not halt his scoring instincts. Frank Etouga was anticipated to score in yesterday’s league game against Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium and equaled Ishmael Addo’s record, but that could not come into fruition. Asante Kotoko played a 1 – 1 draw with newbies Accra Lions but Samuel Boateng pulled parity for then reigning league champions after Samari had shot Accra Lions into the lead. It meant that the Cameroonian goal poacher will complete 2021/22 season on 21 goals.
Meanwhile AshantiGold forward Yaw Annor ends the the season as the top scorer after netting 22 goals. Prior to today’s game against Bibiani Gold Stars at Duns Park, Yaw Annor was just a goal behind Frank Etouga, but he managed to steal the headlines after a personal brace. The first goal came after Yaw Annor had beaten his markers to send a low ball into the net, in the 23rd minutes. The second arrived deep into first half stoppage time. Yaw Annor was put through by Richard Osei Agyemang and the former slotted the ball magnificently.
AshantiGold – in the closing stages of the season – were hit with a damning verdict from the Ghana Football Association as having been involved in match manipulation with Inter Allies last season. The Obuasi-based club per the decision have been demoted to Division Two but that is yet to be finalized as they have appealed the ruling. That could not obstruct the personal ambitions of Yaw Annor to becoming the goal king.
