The latest information coming from the Ashanti Region of Ghana reveals that, Consumers in the Region, have stood up against the Utility Service Providers, on their proposed tariff increment.
This comes following the recent announcement, by the Utility Service Providers (Electricity Company of Ghana-ECG, and the Ghana Water Company Limited-GWCL), to increase their tariff by over a 100%.
According to the Utility Service Providers, the increment in tariff is necessary to meet their operational cost.
Whiles the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), is demanding tariff an increment of 148%, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), is asking for 334% increment; but customers in the Ashanti Region have kicked against the two proposed increments.
According to a report captured on citinewsroom.com, the consumers in the Ashanti Region kicked against the utility tariff increment, due to the current high cost of living, poor service delivery by utility service providers, and the current economic hardship in the region.
According to some consumers, “The utility service providers, should wait for some time, before they increase their tariffs. My concern as a consumer is that, things are not in order at the moment. For the type of service they are rendering, it is not even convincing enough”.
Some consumers also claimed that, “There are people whose salaries with the utility service providers, are more than the work they do. They don’t do any work, but they get high pay, so they can’t use all the monies to pay themselves, and ask the public to bear the cost”.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ishmael Edjekumhene, the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the PURC, has revealed that, the “PURC is considering the proposals presented by the utility providers, after which we will make a decision. What I am certain of is, no way will consumers be made to bear the outrageous cost”.
