The Black Stars of Ghana managed one all draw with the Central African Republic this afternoon in a group E encounter. The four time champions were tipped to win this match looking at all the metrics. The Central African Republic played away from home, without supporters with all odds against them. Aside from that, looking at the pedigree of both teams, every analytic of the game would have predicted the score line in favour of the West African giants. But this is football and more so modern football does not follow team history or what legacy you might have achieved in times past.
Kudus Mohammed opened the score line for Ghana in the seventeenth minute after Ghana had played very well in the first ten minutes. With total dominance in the first thirty minutes, everybody thought this was going to be an easy task for the Black Stars. From the 32nd minute, the game started changing until in the 41st minute, the host found the net.
The following reasons might have accounted for the team failing to get the much anticipated victory:
First, the Central African Republic players were too physical. Their tackles, movements and the entire playing style of the team weren’t too friendly especially after they got their goal. This even got Jonathan Mensah injured and was rushed for medical care through an ambulance. Probably, the referee was supposed to have sounded more caution than we saw.
Again, the Black Stars might have belittled the Central African Republic team. From the 32nsd minute, you could see Ghana just playing the ball in their half only while some players were walking. This is not to say the team was inactive but it gave an impression that they are already with the game.
Also, the tactics of the CAR team worked to perfection especially in the second half. They knew the Ghanaian team had a lot of skillful players. One of the strategies was to intimidate them with strong tackles. It was their game plan to defend well and catch the Black Stars on the break. All said and done, the statistics of the match didn’t reflect in the score line but the entire game was a good one.
