Asante Kotoko secures record extending 26th GPL title

Asante Kotoko won the 2021-22 Ghana Premier League, GPL title today after earning the point they required to be crowned champions of the competition.

The Porcupines drew 1-1 with their regional rivals AshantiGold SC in an outstanding Matchday 29 fixture played at the Len Clay Stadium at Obuasi this afternoon.

Going into this fixture, Kotoko needed just a point to be crowned winners of the campaign and, they dully delivered after coming from behind to draw with the Miners.

Yaw Annor gave AshantiGold SC a first half lead with his 20th GPL goal of the season to move level pegging with Asante Kotoko’s Frank Etouga Mbella who drew a blank in this afternoon’s game.

The Porcupines responded well in the second half with defender Maxwell Agyeman drawing them level midway through the session to hand them the point they needed to secure the title.

Asante Kotoko now has an unassailable 10 points lead at the top of the stairs with three matches to end the campaign.

This is Asante Kotoko’s 26th Ghanaian top-flight title making them the most successful side in the history of the competition.

With three matches to end the campaign, Kotoko can start to build for next season especially so as they will be competing in the CAF Champions League competition.

The Porcupines will feel less pressure for the reminder of this campaign as they confront their last three games.

Kotoko will next be in action on Sunday as they travel to the capital to face Great Olympics at the Accra Sports Stadium.

They will return to their home venue of Kumasi to play Elmina Sharks at the Baba Yara Stadium after the Olympics game, before heading back to Accra to play Accra Lions in their final game of the season.
