Let’s Match People’s Lifestyles To Their Income Stream Through Forensic Audit – Domelevo

Ghana’s immediate-past Auditor General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, is urging the country to make an aggressive push towards matching the lifestyles of some of the people to their known revenue stream through forensic audits.

He says it is simply not enough to ask people – public office holders to make assets declaration, something which the audit service officials do not even bother themselves to verify – authenticate.

The ex-Auditor General who won the admiration of some Ghanaians with his enthusiasm and courage to expose acts of financial malfeasance and loathed by others who accused him of being overly partisan and often rushing to doing things – go public with audit findings just to attract attention to himself, said the lifestyle of some people in the society necessarily needed to be critically examined to determine if it is commensurate with the income that they are earning.

Where people are found to be living the lives of Arabian Kings which their known incomes simply cannot support – living beyond their means, that should raise a red flag. Daniel Yaw Domelevo said this was how to detect fraud and prevent corruption.

According to the former Auditor General, putting in place a law that will promote lifestyle audit is the way forward to tackle the systematic abuses and raise tax revenue.

“If you have so much assets, then where is the income from which you had acquired the assets, and if, you have so much income, did you pay tax on the income?”

The call by the ex-Auditor General comes amid the circulation of a 10-page Will, listing the properties of the late Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, aka Sir John, who was a politically-exposed person. The Will has left many stunned – completely befuddled.

Many have expressed worry about how people are becoming rich overnight in this country.
