The Institution of Engineering and Technology of Ghana (IET-GH) has advised Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to refrain from interfering with engineers’ and other technical experts’ work at assemblies in order to prevent people from building in waterways.
The appeal follows President Akufo-directive Addo’s to the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to remove constructions that hinder the free flow of water as soon as possible.
After torrential rains on Saturday and midnight on Tuesday, portions of Accra were submerged for the second time in less than a week.
In response to the President’s directive, Henry Kwadwo Boateng, President of IET-GH, said the flooding crisis in Ghana, particularly in Accra, is multifarious, adding that MMDA managers must allow technical professionals to do their work in order to help curb the continuous flooding.
He encouraged the President to walk the walk and ensure that his direction is followed by the appropriate agencies.
Former employee Ing Boateng of one of the assembly criticised the Chief Executives for interfering with the work of engineers whose job it is to guarantee that no structures are built on waterways.
As a result, he urged Chief Executives to assist and encourage engineers to carry out their legal obligations.
The President of IET-GH once again blamed the flooding on “large man and prominent individuals” who bought wetlands.
He encouraged the Land Use and Spatial Planning Departments of the various legislatures to discontinue mentioning lands that were not intended for residential use.
Ing Boateng went on to say that the Ministry of Works and Housing’s Hydrological Department needs to be given the resources it needs to carry out its task of addressing the perennial floods.
