Fixthecountry Conveynor, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has descended on National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for its report calling Ghanaians to “reject the purveyors of chaos, those who advocate for the overthrow of the constitution”.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, 11th May 2022, he wrote;
“Let me rant small p3!
The acting NCCE Chair has been reported as calling on Ghanaians to “reject the purveyors of chaos, those who advocate for the overthrow of the constitution”.
I want her to name just one person who is advocating for chaos and an overthrow of the Constitution.
She is also reported to have said, NCCE wants a “comprehensive national debate” on the issue of constitutional reforms. “Comprehensive” ooo.
When has the NCCE ever platformed those who have in recent times have been the most loud in the calls for constitutional reforms? What attempts at dialogue have they made towards #FixTheCountry to engage us in this “comprehensive” debate?
Anyway, Miss Addy, My good friend from Occupy Ghana, if you want “comprehensive debate”, let’s have it then. Let’s get brutally honest with each other.
Towards 7th January this year, which is now Constitution day, FixTheCountry wanted to start local language education on the Constitution. So I personally reached out to Kathleen.
We wanted to know if NCCE had done any informational videos in the local language in their 30 years of existence. Our hope was that, if they had some materials, we could use it to do our education in market places. We were raising funds privately to get projectors and stream them in the markets across the country.
We even sent a proposal to Star Ghana on that idea. Her response to me was I should go and check their website and social media pages.
I took it in stride. Well I did check those websites and social media pages, and I saw all their videos dancing Jerusalema and wearing NCCE T-shirts. Not even one video in local language, breaking down the constitution for ordinary Ghanaians to understand it. 30 years of funding NCCE to make Ghanaians informed of the constitution, today 86% of Ghanaians report that they have never seen the constitution.
I have personal accounts of you Kathleen being invited to programmes and refusing to be on the same panel as FixTheCountry activists. It may make our common friends uncomfortable, to hear this. But Kathleen was one of the most vocal active citizens under Mahama.
And personally, I found comradeship in our joint struggle. Since her appointment however, she has been very intolerant of activists and their work. And she has gone out of her way to purposely, de-amplify their work. You have a huge platform which you could have you used to give ballast and leverage activist voices. Yet..
So when you come out of the woodworks talking of “comprehensive national debate” and claiming you are rejecting “purveyors of chaos, those who advocate for the overthrow of the constitution”, I’m actually confused as to who and what you are actually talking about.
Who are you engaging and for what end? All these rehearsed and stage managed gestures don’t impress me, if the intent is to reinforce the status quo, rather than reform it so it leads to systemic justice.
Let’s respect ourselves this morning.”
