Abuakwa State College (ABUSCO) is a second cycle institution located in Kyebi in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
Established in 1936 by three elders of the Methodist Church at Asafo Akyem, the school was an institution to prepare Ghanaian students who wanted to sit at the then Junior Cambridge Examination. It was relocated to Kyebi in 1967 to enable more students especially those from Abuakwa enroll in the school.
The school has trained many who have distinguished themselves in society. A few of the known personalities have been profiled below:
Akenten Appiah-Menka
A Lawyer and Industrialist, Akenten Appiah-Menka was born in Aboabogya in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
He proceeded to Abuakwa State College for his Ordinary Level Certificate and Adisadel College for her Advance Level Certificate.
He left Ghana from the Takoradi Port to Marseille in France and moved to England. He enrolled at the Northwestern Polytechnic, London (now University of North London) that same year and obtained his GCE Advanced Level Certificate in 1955. He continued at the University of Manchester in 1956 to study Law and graduated in 1959. He was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn.
Appiah-Menka returned to Ghana and went into private legal practice.
In 1969, he was elected Member of Parliament in the Second Republic representing the people of the then Afigya Kwabre Constituency. He was also Deputy Minister of Trade and Deputy Attorney General under the Busia Government. He was detained by the Supreme Military Council after the Busia Government was overthrown in 1972 and was later released.
The industrialist and one time President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) started a palm oil plantation which became the Ashanti Oil Mills and the produced edible oil. The business grew to become the Appiah Menka Complex Ltd that manufactured the famous Appino Soap. The soap production begun in Kumasi through a joint venture with the National Investment Bank.
A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he also served in late President Atta Mills Administration as a member of the Constitutional Review Commission.
He died in February 2018.
Dr. Jacob Kwakye-Maafo
Dr. Jacob Kenneth Kofi Kwakye-Maafo also known as (Nana Ohemeng Awere V), is a Ghanaian Physician who specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Traditional Ruler.
The Chief of Assin Nsuta and Benkumhene (Divisional Chief) of the Assin Apimanim Traditional Area in the Central Region of Ghana is the brother of Yaw Osafo Maafo.
The Founder/CEO of West End Hospital in Kumasi is an alumnus of Abuakwa State College where he had his Form One to Form Five Education, and Opoku Ware School for his Sixth Form Education.
Dr. Kwakye-Maafo was awarded the Government of Ghana Scholarship to study Medicine in Germany, where he studied German at the University of Leipzig and University of Greifswald in 1962. He was admitted to the Freie University of Berlin, under the German/Ghanaian Scholarship Programme (DAAD). He graduated as a Medical Practitioner after passing the State Examination in September 1968.
In 1971 he was awarded the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree at the Freie University, Berlin (MB, ChB). After qualification, he worked in several hospitals in Berlin the Rudolf VIRCHOW, Westend Klinikum and the Frauenklinik am Mariendorferweg before returning to Ghana in 1972.
The past president of the Ghana Medical Association is an advocate of community health and has helped establish several health centres, rural hospitals and clinics in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He was a member of the committee set up by the government of Ghana in 2003 with the task to implement the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Dr Kwakye-Maafo is a foundation fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, and a fellow of the West African College of Physicians.
Kwasi Amoako Atta
Kwasi Amoako-Atta is a Lawyer and Politician.
He attended Abuakwa State College where he obtained his GCE Ordinary Level Certificate and Tarkwa Senior High School for his GCE Advance Level Certificate.
After graduation from the University of Ghana, he was employed at the now defunct Meat Marketing Board as a Regional manager. He later joined Unilever Ghana as Brands Manager and then Head of Logistics and Marketing.
Amoako Atta returned to school to pursue law and after being called to the Ghana Bar, he joined the Legal Department of Unilever till 2010 when he joined active politics.
He has been the Member of Parliament for Atiwa West since 2010 through a bye election and is currently Ghana’s Minister for Roads and Highways since 2017.
Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah
A Politician and Freight Forwarder, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah is currently the Member of Parliament for Tema West Constituency. He is also a Former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry in the first term of the Akufo-Addo Administration.
The CEO of Carlos King Freight Services is an alumus of Abuakwa State College where he had his A Level Certificate after his O Level at Tema Secondary School.
Bob Pixel
Emmanuel Yeboah Bobbie who was known as Bob Pixel was a famous professional photographer and graphic designer.
Bob Pixel who has always been passionate about art attended Odorgonno Senior High School for his Ordinary Level Certificate, and Abuakwa State College for his Advanced Level Certificate. He then went to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) where he graduated with a BA in Communication Design.
He worked with international agencies such as UNICEF and with brands such as Ecobank, Woodin Fashion, Vodafone Ghana, Fan Milk, Emirates, Samsung, Coca-Cola and others. He also worked with celebrities like Lydia Forson, Yvonne Nelson, Manifest, Menaye Donkor and others.
He died in February last year (2021) and was posthumously awarded Best Photographer at the Entertainment Achievement Awards.
Mzbel
Musician, Belinda Nana Akua Amoah who grew up in Jamestown had her secondary education at Abuakwa State College. She then applied to train as a Bilingual Secretary at the Ghana Institute of Languages. She heard Manifold Tutorial College was offering a course in Television Production and she enrolled. She studied Public Relations, Television and Radio Production.
She interned at GBC Radio 1 and Groove FM (now Adom FM). She also worked at TV3 as a Production Assistant and Floor Manager for hit programmes such as Goldblast and Talking Drum.
In 2002, Mzbel joined Hush Hush Studios which had come to the scene and this propelled her music career. Whiles working part time at Hush Hush Studios, she got a job at Metro TV as a Digital Video Editor and Producer for the weekend entertainment programme “Smash TV”.
From Metro TV, she was employed at Apex Advertising as a Production Manager and Video Editor, combining it with her music career till she decided to do music full time.
Mzbel as an entertainer is not without controversies and has churned out hits after hits from 16 Years, Awoso Me, E Dey Be, Saucy Girl, Yopoo, My Bonnet, Logoligi and other massive tunes.
