The annual colorful Ankos Street Carnival in the twin cities of Sekondi-Takoradi was a wonderful celebration full of exciting moments. The festival was a perfect blend of culture, arts, and creativity accompanied with brass band music.
In this year’s edition, revelers were entertained by the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah who joined the masqueraders to display his dancing skills. He was also joined by the Executive Director of GNPC foundation, Dr. Dominic Eduah and the two entertained the crowd with their fancy dance.
The masqueraders are usually made up of various groups with colorful costumes. Every group’s costume is different from the others, aside from all being made from bright-colored fabrics. There are over a dozen different groups with each having hundreds of members.
The festival is celebrated to honor John Kenu (John Conny) who defeated the Dutch who had taken over Ahanta lands and sold them into slavery. The festival has been celebrated since 1709.
If you missed the Christmas edition, you sure would not like to miss the new year’s edition which comes off on 1st January 2023. Especially after watching this video below.
