Ruth Koomson came back to Ghana from the United Arab Emirates months ago and has shared her experience working in Abu Dhabi and how she felt like a slave.
In a chat on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, Ruth revealed that she worked as a house help for almost four years, but she never went out of the house of her own free will.
“I couldn’t go out. I only went out of the house if they were going out. So for almost four years, I had no freedom. There is nothing freedom if you work with in household in UAE. I’d say it’s slavery because if you have no freedom of movement, it is slavery. You only move when you are told,” she revealed.
Speaking about the nature of her job, Ruth mentioned that it was fairly good because she did not pay or buy anything. She was well-fed but sometimes had to overwork.
“I could eat all I wanted and did not pay anything, but I had less sleep because they come home late at night when I was asleep. And they will make you do little chores when they arrive.”
Moreover, Ruth stated that she left with her boyfriend for the UAE, but they separated when they arrived. According to Ruth, her boyfriend got a job in Dubai while she worked in Abu Dhabi. Miss Koomson noted that they were unable to see each other, and the frustration tore them apart.
Ruth added that despite the regret, she gained some experience and intends to better herself. She is currently studying general nursing.
