Prior to the World Cup 2022 finals between Argentina and France, a lot of conversations have been generated by netizens about the player selection France made towards the FIFA World cup 2018 and 2022 games. Revealing that, about 50℅ of France’s top National team players were of African descent is a whole topic to talk about.
In a bid to expatiate on this, however, certain revelations have been made on the reasons why these players choose to play for other teams aside Africa. Honestly speaking, it’s not entirely the faults of these players because, facts indicate that corruption is rampant with national team call-ups in Africa, and merits are not considered.
The father of French striker Kylian Mbappé told everything that happened to the media, forcing his son to play for the Blues rather than Cameroon.
Mbappe was born in Paris to a Cameroonian father, Wilfried, and an Algerian mother. But he had made efforts to play in the senior national team for the Central African country his father hailed from.
In 2018, Wilfried claimed that a member of the Cameroon Football Federation asked for money before Kylian Mbappé could join the Cameroon Indomitable Lions squad.
The father of the PSG striker returned to the negligence and greediness of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) which had nevertheless had the opportunity to enlist Kylian Mbappé.
“At first, I wanted my son to play for Cameroon, but someone at the Cameroon Football Federation charged an amount of money that I did not have to play him. The French did not charge anything, he said via Cameroon Concord News.
He added; Being a member of the national team is a privilege, and Kylian’s father believes that players should not be paid to represent their country. Kylian Mbappe equally supported the corruption claim made by his father against the Cameroonian National Team when he said; “I am not Cameroonian. I am French. At the beginning of my career, when I was still in the shadows, my father called on Fecafoot to make me play for the Cameroon National team but a large sum of money was requested from us to be admitted to the team. My father being disgusted, therefore turned to France. And France gave me a chance to show what I was worth”.
“Today, Cameroon is calling on me, they are giving me a nationality that is not mine. I am French and I will remain French”, said the man whom specialists consider to be one of the greatest players of the next ten years.
