Seen is believing is an ancient adage. It’s another good news as the central train station at Afienya on the ongoing Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project has been completed. It is astonishing that this development is happening on the blind side of most Ghanaians. But with the railway, you only make noise when you have trains actually running. But even so, only the most persistent doubter would not be impressed with the amount and quality of work that the railway sector has achieved over the past few years.
The Tema-Mpakadan project is being built as a part of a multimodal transportation network. Designed to improve connectivity between the Tema port and the country’s Northern regions. It is part of the first phase of the thousand-kilometer Ghana to Burkina Faso Railway interconnectivity project. Which will build a railway line between the port of Tema in Ghana and Ouagadougou the capital of Burkina Faso. The government of Ghana’s strategy is to develop the country’s Railway industry to improve its socio-economic conditions and its progress is looking very promising. So stick to this article to the end as we look at the funding of this mega initiative’s work-in-progress, completion, and all the updated information surrounding this amazing ongoing developmental project.Â
A train station is a railway facility where trains stop to load or unload passengers, flights, or boats. It generally consists of at least one platform, one track, and a station building providing such ancillary services. As ticket sales, waiting rooms, and baggage services. They provide shelter from the adverse climate, food and drinks bathroom facilities, and other facilities that make one’s journey more comfortable.
This is to inform you of how vital the recently completed Afienya Train Station is to the project’s entity. Construction of the project’s entity began in July 2018 and is expected to be completed this month December 2022. The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project formerly known as the Tema – Akosombo Railway project was proposed as a support project in 2007. In 2007 feasibility studies for this project were commenced. The parliament of Ghana approved the Tema – Akosombo Railway project in November 2016. The project’s agreement was reviewed after the new government came to power in January 2017. The review was ordered due to the potential impact on the Akosombo dam caused by drilling ethanol through rocks to the Akosombo port. Other factors that prompted the review included security concerns and a lack of adequate economic activities near the train terminal at the Akosombo Port.
The project scope was changed following the review and the route length was increased from 84.83 kilometers to 97.6 kilometers. The review scope was what included the construction of a rail bridge over the Volta River and assigned the railway line to feature six passenger stations, a flights terminal near the Tema Port of which the recently completed Afienya Train Station is a part. The Railway terminal is intended to enable easy cargo transportation to and from Ghana’s North and beyond to the port in Tema. The project also included a 300-meter-long railway bridge connecting Senchi and Old Accra. The railway project is being funded by the Export-Import Bank of India. The Indian-based Exim bank has pledged 447 million dollars in funding to support the project’s design and construction.Â
The parliament of Ghana has approved a 230 million dollar budget for the purchase of ruling stock for the project. Indian construction and engineering Afcons Infrastructure LTD was awarded the contract for the construction of the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project in November 2016. The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project will provide safe quick and cost-efficient transportation of goods to Ghanaian shippers. The new line is expected to provide a reliable transportation mode for transit shippers and shippers in the northern portions of the country.Â
It will also save the landlocked countries of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali. The project is expected to relieve traffic congestion by reducing cargo movements on roadways. As well as alleviate other axle load-related problems associated with the transportation of cargo to neighboring countries. Upon the completion of the new sophisticated rail station, the gleaming new tracks of the Eastern extension line provide the basis for hope that our common railway journey is not a mirage.Â
And to add the icing on the cake Ghana’s presidency and contractors working on the project near Akosombo have disclosed that work is 95 complete. And on schedule to be handed over to the government by the end of this year. In a tweet, the presidency said this project when completed is expected to promote economic activities along its route while reducing traffic on the roads. By the end of 2022, The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project which is now 95 finished is anticipated to be completed. The Jubilee House said this solidifies considerable evidence that indeed the train is coming.
