The Ghana Police Service has a code of conduct used in arresting suspects for investigation. According to Article 13(1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution (as amended through 1996): No person shall be deprived of his life intentionally except in the exercise of the execution of a sentence of a court in respect of a criminal offence under the laws of Ghana of which he has been convicted.
However, the policemen in your picture ignored the laws of the land and used excessive force, anger and beatings to kill an innocent taxi just because he was resisting arrest. According to the Ghanaian musician, social media activist, and politician, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, this sad incident happened in Takoradi, Western Region.
If you watch the video carefully, you can see that the taxi driver is lying on the floor while two policemen are beating him mercilessly. The policemen were caught on camera using their legs, and hands to beat the taxi driver. They were beating this taxi driver as if they have been given the mandate to kill him. The police officers after beating this for about 8 minutes, held his head firmly to the ground.
At this point, the taxi driver was too weak that he could resist them anymore. The policemen put him into their car and sent him to their police station. However, Kwame Asare Obeng revealed that the taxi driver didn’t survive the beatings from the policemen. He died after they sent him to the police station.
According to A Plus, the Police Service Department in Takoradi later came and lied to the public that the taxi driver committed suicide. However, this video is evidence of how the taxi driver was beaten like an animal for more than 8 minutes and died after they took him to the police station.
A Plus, therefore, called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. George Akuffo Dampare, and the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to fight for justice for this deceased taxi driver. He suggested that the police officers involved should be arrested, and prosecuted and the suspect’s family must be compensated.
This is what A Plus wrote on his official Instagram account:
“Ghana Police Service, I want to know something. How long will it take us to explain to you that such brutality is unacceptable anywhere in the world in 2022? This is how you murdered a taxi driver in Takoradi and lied that he committed suicide. The most dangerous organisation in this country is the Ghana Police Service. Why? These officers must be arrested immediately, prosecuted, and the victim must be compensated”.
