My Father J An Ankrah Has Not Been Appreciated Enough – Jackie Ankrah

Jackie Ankrah, an ace broadcaster and singer says that although her father, J A Ankrah, overthrew Dr Kwame Nkrumah, he did so many things we are not told about because we rewrite history all the time.

She stated that Ghanaians must celebrate past leaders like her father, a former head of state, Lieutenant General J A Ankrah, to encourage and inspire the new generation to do more for the country.

Speaking on Asaase Radio with Naa Ashorkor, the singer said,  “And just recently he was honoured at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, and when they wrote and spoke about him, I was proud because my father has done so many things that we don’t get told about because we rewrite history all the time.”

The broadcast journalist further stated that we do not talk about her father enough, which is unfortunate because he overthrew Nkrumah. She described her father as an amazing, remarkable, and incredible soldier and was the first in many things.

Joseph Arthur Ankrah was Ghana’s first military head of state. He also served as chairman of the Organisation of African Unity from 24 February 1966 to 5 November 1966.

He was a Ghanaian Army General and the head of state from 1966 to 1969 as chairman of the National Liberation Council. Before becoming head of state, J A Ankrah served as the first commander of the Ghana Army.

In 1960, he rose to the rank of colonel, where few Ghanaian officers were at that level. He was the only Ghanaian awarded the Military Cross in Leopoldville for acts of unsurpassed gallantry in Congo in 1961.

One of the reasons General Ankrah led the overthrow of Nkrumah was that he claimed by Nkrumah’s arbitrary use of power, he had lost the confidence and support of the Ghanaian people.

He also accused Nkrumah of disregarding the rights of the ordinary Ghanaian and using his power to destroy the other arms of government except for the executive.
