It is worth mentioning that the Minister Of Sports, Mustapha Ussif, said the government was not in a position to finance the trips of supporters to the World Cup in Qatar which kicked off yesterday, November 20, 2022.
“In view of the current situation our country finds itself in, the government has decided it will not be financing supporters to the World Cup.”
Mustapha Ussif made the above statement on Thursday, November 10, at a press briefing to solicit financial support for the national team.
The ministry had in past World Cup campaigns paid for trips of supporters and other Ghanaians to the host country to support the national team.
However, in the Ministry’s press briefing, they appealed to corporate Ghana and the private sector to support and finance some Ghanaian fans to cheer up the team in Qatar.
The Minister also said the Ministry of Youth and Sports will collaborate with the Ghanaian Mission in Qatar to mobilize Ghanaians and other Africans based in the host country to throw support for the Black Stars.
However, according to reports by Joy FM, the government, contrary to earlier statements by the Minister, is flying more than two thousand football fans from Ghana to cheer on the senior national team in Qatar.
Ghana will play its first game of the tournament against Portugal on Thursday, 24th November at 4:00 pm.
