The founder and leader of the Mo Mary Fellowship in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Rev David Armstrong has stressed the need for President Nana Akuffo Addo to make tax laws a complusory option for churches to pay tax.
Speaking to the Correspondent in an interview the clergy said churches need to pay taxes to help government to build the economy.
The man of God argued that in the previous years churches were exempted from paying tax because their activities were seen as something that have no links with business.
But today the clergy said many churches have been allegedly operating in lucrative businesses without paying tax to government.
Rev Armstrong David cited that apart from the orthodox churches that have been allegedly disassociated themselves from trading activities in churches many one man churches have been making profits through sales of goods in their churches.
He noted that though the orthodox churches hardly sells items, they use parts of their resources to support government especially in the areas of education, hospitals among others.
The pastor stressed that whilst the orthodox churches find it appropriate to support economic development some churches owned by individuals see the concept as different.
These one man churches the pastor alleged sells items like eggs, sachets water, handkerchiefs, apples, salt, stones, pepper, anointing oils among others in their churches and make huge profits, they pay nothing to the state.
The pastors behind these alleged deals, Rev Armstrong said hide under the cover of the Holy Bible to archieve their agenda.
But the question which arises from such merchandise activities in the churches the Reverend Minister said are that if the wholesalers who are selling items to the pastors who also sell the items to their church members pay tax to the state.
Why should the pastor be exempted from paying tax to the government.
The man of God also referred readers to the Biblical accounts on where Jesus Christ sacked some money changers from church premises when He realized that they were turning the house of God into market to make money.
Citing what is allegedly happening in the country today one cannot dispute that many one man churches have been making wealth by selling items in their churches.
Under the cover of “direction giving” (Akwankyire) but ended the founders to enrich themselves.
Going forward Rev Armstrong David alleged that the one man churches have been depositing huge sums of monies in banks that are lying idle without using part to support either the government or church members.
They also allegedly build mansions and ride in expensive cars that Head of State cannot buy, yet they pay no tax to support the development of the country.
The man of God further posited that though the Bible made it clear to the churches to support the state at the time the state is in crisis.
But Rev Armstrong David alleged that inspite of the challenges that the country finds itself churches are silient.
Expect the orthodox churches who consistently show support to the state.
Rev Armstrong David indicated that it is due to the aforementioned points and many more hence he is passionately appealing to the President to enforce strict measures that can compel the churches to pay tax.
I am fully ready to comply with the directives if churches are given the green light to pay taxes, the man of God told the correspondent.
