Most “Natural” Skincare Products Contain Allergens

Allergic Contact Dermatitis - Australian Allergy Centre

Most of the “natural” skincare products on the market contain allergens, according to research from dermatologists at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Out of the 1,651 natural skin care products, about 90 per cent of them cause contact dermatitis, lotions, soaps and moisturizers.

Contact dermatitis is a condition that makes skin red or inflamed after contact with an allergen or an irritant. Such substances cause the skin to become red, itchy, dry, and cracked and can blister at its worst.

Human skin is sensitive, and when it comes in contact with some of these personal skincare products, it causes an allergic reaction.

A typical skincare product may contain 15 to 50 ingredients. Research suggests users of such products expose their skin to over 500 chemicals depending on their skincare routine. It implies the more products you use, the more you expose your skin to potential allergens.

Several of these allergens the researchers came across during their study were fragrances like lavender and botanical extracts. Also, some of the products are labelled fragrance-free even though they contain fragrances that can irritate your skin.

Be mindful that products labelled as “natural” tell you nothing about the safety of the ingredient used in manufacturing the said products. Manufacturers use the buzzword “Natural” as a marketing weapon to lure consumers into buying their skincare products.

Most of these “natural” products are not safe and harmful to your skin. That is not to say “natural” skincare products are all harmful. There are genuine ones you can use.

Consumers should demand that the beauty and cosmetics industry back up their claims with evidence to avoid misleading their consumers.
