Former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, has attributed Ghana’s 2014 World Cup fiasco to FIFA’s monetary increment that period.
Hon. Afriyie-Ankrah, stated that players demanded an increase in qualification bonus because they realized that head of footballing governing body had increased the mundial’s money hence incited an idea of increment from the state.
“In my case, what happened was that; the government, I think that was when we were preparing to go for the IMF”, he told Gold Talk Sports.
“So government said they were gonna give them the $75,000 they got in the previous World Cup”.
“The players also felt that FIFA had increased the amount of money they give to every participating country and since they were playing, they deserved more so they asked for $100,000”.
For the first time, Ghana exited the competition from the group stages after failing to pick a win in all three group games.
