“Cocoa Farmers Are The Poorest People In Ghana” – CEO, SEND Ghana

At the conference on living income and human rights in Ghana’s cocoa sector, the CEO of Send Ghana, Mr. Siapha Kamara said since he started working in the sector he has come to realize that cocoa Farmers are the poorest people in the country.

According to him, the cocoa farmer has the worse access roads in their communities, poor health care, no electricity in some communities, and no better school meanwhile cocoa contributes more income to the country.

He made these statements at a conference on living income and human rights in ghana’s cocoa sector on Wednesday 2nd November 2022 at Kumasi organized by send Ghana. The idea was to bring together cocoa farmers so they can share the challenges they face in their respective cocoa-growing areas to put together a document and engage various shareholders on it.

However, the secretary of the national board of cocoa farmers, the world cocoa farmers , Mr. Moses Djan Aseidu said the cost of producing cocoa now is high. The price of all Inputs for cocoa production keeps increasing meanwhile the price of cocoa is not reflecting the cost of production making the farmers always at a loss; if we don’t address these challenges then we should be worried about cocoa in the future.

Nevertheless, Nana Akwasi Barning Ackah, project officer of send Ghana and coordinator of GCCP said they will also engage the private sector, credit facilities, lawmakers, and civil society and present the concerns of farmers to them and the way forward to make cocoa sustainable.

The conference was attended by various cocoa cooperative Unions, world cocoa farmers organizations, concerned cocoa farmers associations, and media.

SEND GHANA was established to build advocacy at the grassroots level to enable local communities in remote areas to engage the government and ensure their rights to benefit from national policies and programs.

It is the first CSO to undertake agricultural budget tracking and advocacy to hold the government accountable to fulfill its commitment to increase investment in the sector.
