‘Fate’ Of Adwoa Safo To Be Decided And 2 Other Things To Watch Out For As Parliament Resumes Today

Ghana’s Parliament will be resuming today, Tuesday, October 25, 2022 after a long break. The break was to enable the law makers to have some rest as well as visit their constituencies and be abreast with some of the issues affecting their constituents. Well, the long break is over and it time for them to return. The 8th Parliament has been a frosty one with the two sides battling almost every decisive bill that is presented.

Two of the bitter debates before the break bothered on the electronic levy which was later approved after the Minority walked out. Again the two sides were divided when it came to what should happen to the Dome-Kwabenya seat. Whereas the Majority side wanted the seat to be declared vacant, the Minority wanted a different verdict.

Well as the house resumes the issue of Adwoa Safo will come up again. The last statement made about that issue was when Speaker Bagbin said he was going to get a written verdict on the case. Many will expect him to present to the house when the house reconvenes this week. Currently, membership of the House is made up of 136 NDC MPs and 137+1 NPP MPs. If Adwoa Safo is evicted it will leave the Majority with 136+1.

Again all eyes will be on the 2023 Budget. Ghana has been hit by economic hardship and this has made many start to complain under this economic turmoil. Prices of goods are rising as the cedi depreciates against the dollar. Inflation as of September was 37.2% and many will wait to see if the government will make certain cuts to bring relief to Ghanaians. Ofori Atta will be the man to watch.

A number of Bills will also be considered when the house reconvenes. Eleven bills will be discussed at the Committee level. Seven of them are Public bills while 4 are Private Members Bill. Some of the Bills include the Intestate Succession Bill 2022, Promotion of the proper Human Sexual Rights and the Ghanaian Family Values Bill, Affirmation Action Bill 2022, Minerals and Mining Amendment bill 2022 etc.

Last year there was a bitter end to Parliament and many will not want to see this happening as the House sits to the end of December. What are your expectations?
