Church of Pentecost constructs a prison rehabilitation facility

In an effort to reform convicts so they can be helpful members of society, the Church of Pentecost constructed the Inmates Skills Acquisition and Reformation Center at Nsawam in the Eastern Region.

The center, a 320-bed facility with full furnishings, was presented to the Ghana Prisons Service on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at a ceremony held in Ahodwo in the Nsawam-Adoagyire Municipality.

There are four dorm rooms, a medical facility, a visitors’ lounge with a store, an administration building that is completely equipped and contains auxiliary offices, an ICT lab with computers and equipment, and a tailoring shop.

Additionally, the center has a carpentry workshop, a chapel outfitted with musical instruments, a baptistry, a kitchen with a dining room, a volleyball court, CCTV installations, and other amenities.

The Nsawam Prison Reformation Centre is the second to be built by the church, after constructing a similar one at Ejura in the Ashanti Region in May 2021. In the Savannah and Ashanti regions, respectively, two such facilities are currently in varying phases of completion at Damongo and Obuasi.

The leader of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, stated in his speech that “as Christians, we believe we must not only lead and usher people to Heaven but also show care in their livelihoods here on Earth by making them valuable to society.

This facility has been named the Inmates Skills Acquisition and Reformation Center in conjunction with the Ghana Prisons Service, he added.

He stated that, as of October 2022, there were a total of 14,957 inmates in Ghana’s jails, as opposed to the maximum capacity of 9,850, and that overcrowding is one of the major causes of terrible prison conditions in Ghana and other countries.

He also revealed that the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, which were designed to house 850 inmates, are currently housing 3,187 inmates, more than 275% more inmates than needed.

In response to this reality, The Church of Pentecost took the initiative to collaborate with the Ghana Prisons Service in order to relieve prison overcrowding and improve living circumstances for prisoners, according to Apostle Nyamekye.

The church’s construction of the Ejura Prison camp last year, according to Apostle Nyamekye, may already be paying off. He mentioned that 36 prisoners are currently receiving training in various trades (tailoring, kente weaving, leatherworks, carpentry, and metalworks).

He continued by saying that many of the prisoners had already received training at the factory and had subsequently been released.

Additionally, in the Savannah and Ashanti regions’ Kawampe and Abesoa, respectively, a police station and a medical facility are ready for commissioning.
