Popular writer for the ruling NPP, P.K Sarpong has asserted that Ghanaians have come to the realization that the pressure on the local currency in relation to the US Dollar is as a result of the huge demands for the dollar by importers.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Friday, 21st October 2022, he wrote penned that;
We currently have a situation where the demand for the US currency has outstripped its supply and this, ultimately, piles pressures on the cedi as more of same are needed to acquire the dollar.Â
People have called for a restriction on the imports of some commodities which are also produced locally. While some have mentioned rice and poultry products importations, others have suggested that nonessential food items and goods must also be banned for now.Â
These suggestions may appear as draconian or radical but the resultant effects would be beneficial to the Ghanaian economy. In my layman’s opinion, we could consider such a system. He remarked.
What I find to be an impediment to such a move is how some media outlets and persons would likely turn around to pitch camps with these restricted importers and bash the government.
Some media personalities would just give audience to these people who would sentimentally narrate their ordeals and how they are being affected negatively by the ban on the importation of their products.Â
This would, eventually throw the policy off-balance and may lead to a reversal of same. It is important for all of us to embrace such a policy no matter how difficult it would be. We shall get the local currency freed from the snares of the dollar of such a measure is adopted. P.K Sarpong added.
