Campaigns have been launched by Media General Ghana Limited, which operates Onua TV/FM, TV3, OnuaOnline, and other media platforms, to urge the government to stop assaulting the media and instead address the issues facing the country.
The ads, which include slogans like “Arrest the Dollar, Not the Media” and “Stop Galamsey, Not the Media,” focus on the government’s attempts to silence the media about the problems that it has done nothing to solve, such as the Cedi’s persistent depreciation versus the dollar.
There was a significant increase in the value of the Cedi relative to the dollar over the course of ten months, from January 2022 (when it was worth GH6.08) to October 2022 (when it was worth GH15.00).
Blessed Godsbrain Smart, a.k.a. Captain Smart, who presents Maakye on Onua TV/FM, was one of Media General’s employees that was arrested on Wednesday for comments he made about the President’s involvement in the issue.
