A popular writer for the ruling NPP PK Sarpong has asserted that Ghana Union of Traders’ Association intended strike is problematic and will affect them negatively.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, 18th October 2022, he wrote;
“GUTA has announced closures of stores in the Greater Accra Region as far as its members are concerned. The closures begin tomorrow till next week Monday.Â
This is problematic in so many ways. First of all, GUTA members import not more than 15% of goods into the country. About 85% of imports are done by foreigners who operate businesses in Ghana.”
He explained that it simply means the effects of these closures would be minimal since GUTA gets submerged when compared to the foreign importers.
Moreover, consumers who would be affected would run to these foreign shops for their goods. Who loses? Not the consumers nor government but the traders (GUTA).Â
If GUTA had the numbers like the foreigners, then the adverse effects of these measures could have been unbearable. As things stand now, they may not be able to achieve their intended goal. P.K Sarpong remarked.
He added that even though he is not in favour of this action they have taken, they have stated that these foreign importers have been breaching the regulations that govern how foreigners can import goods.
That angle needs to be looked at and possible remedies found to curb same as it is the main driving force behind the local currency’s struggles against the US Dollar. He advised.
