President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Ado Dankwah Akufo-Addo has reiterated his government’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining, also known as Galamsay.

The issue of illegal mining has become topical in recent times following the re-arrest of Chinese illegal mining kingpin, Aisha Huang.

President Akufo-Addo has however vowed to fight the menace to save Ghana’s forest and natural reserves for future generations.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace on Sunday, October 16, 2022, as part of his working visit to the Ashanti Region, President Akufo-Addo said his government will surely end the illegal mining menace in the country.

“We are here to eradicate galamsay and surely, it would be eradicated. No government has shown that resilience in the fight against galamsay”, he said.

“One issue that has generated negative public criticism is galamsay. Though it attracted less public discussion before my tenure, it is the talk of the town, even among traditional leaders.

“This means the issue is common and calls for all hands on deck to bring it to an end”, he added.
