The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress was earlier this week ordered by an Accra High Court to apologize and retract certain statements he made about Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the minister of Energy and MP for Manhyia South. The NDC Communications Officer has spoken after the decision was taken against him. In a bold statement on Facebook he has noted that the struggle is not over and he will continue with his fight till he is vindicated.
Aside the apology and retraction, Sammy Gyamfi was slapped with a hefty fine of 500,000 cedis. Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah was questioned by Paul Adom Otchere as to why he demanded for such large amount from Sammy Gyamfi. Paul questioned if Sammy Gyamfi had such money on him to cough out. Interestingly, Baffour Awuah stated that he didn’t ask for 500,000 cedis but actually demanded for 1,000,000.
He explained that the cedi has depreciated and so that caused the judge to award them just 500,000. He added that the dollar-cedi value then was high but now the depreciation of the cedi meant that the amount had to be reduced to meet the new low value of the cedi. Paul then asked him why he mentioned a depreciation of the cedi because no one had asked him to say something regarding that.
“Has the cedi depreciated? You are going to bring asem oo. We are not talking about cedi depreciation. We are talking about Sammy Gyamfi and you are saying cedi depreciation” Paul said. According to Paul he doesn’t want to wake up the next day to get calls that he talked about cedi depreciation on his show.
Many have bemoaned the rate at which the cedi has depreciated. The year began with 1 dollar trading at a little over 6 cedis. Currently, a dollar is above 12 cedis making Ghanaians raise questions about the state of the economy. Many expect the cedi to fall lower considering the economic plight of the country.
