Otumfuor Osei Tutu, the King of the Ashanti didn’t mince words yesterday when he called out chiefs under his jurisdiction for being complicit in the illegal mining activities which have plagued water bodies and forests in the Kingdom. He also lambasted the efforts of security officers who are deployed to various sites to curb the menace as “Camouflage” which means the country is at a standstill.
The King alleged that none of his sub-chiefs have mustered up the willpower to inform him about any illegal activities within their area and some of them have taken money intending to aid those involved in the illicit act. Sadly, Cocoa trees is cut down to make way for “galamsey” activities.
Reacting to the King’s remarks, Kevin Ekow Baidoo Taylor the host of “With All Due Respect,” opined that it smacks of double standards and if the King is complaining, who will others complain to? He continued by saying that there are 68 paramount chiefs and all lands belong to Otumfuor Osei Tutu who has the power to stop galamsey.
“Why is Otumfuor not emphatic to ban excavators in his kingdom and give an instruction that nobody should dig the soil looking for gold? Is Otumfuor Blaming or complaining about illegal mining? Otumfuor posture indicates that he has no powers in the Ashanti Kingdom,” he concluded.
