President Akufo-Addo this week met with 2 groups of people in his quest to end galamsey in the country. The government of the president has been met with a lot of challenges but probably the biggest of them all has been his inability to stop galamsey. In 2017 President Akufo-Addo boldly stated that he was ready to put his presidency on the line as he fights galamsey. Years on and not much has been seen. The President in his meeting called for the non-partisanship of the fight against galamsey.
The President called for evidence to nab all those involved in the illegality. He pledged not to shield anyone in his government found to be engaging in galamsey. Despite these hard talks, many have questioned why the President wants evidence when they are glaring before him. On TV3’s The Keypoints, Elvis Morris Donkoh, MP for Abura, Asebu and Kwamankese noted that despite allegations at some people in his own party he has no evidence.
This view was contradicted by Abraham Amaliba, a legal brain with the NDC. Amaliba mentioned certain names within the NPP and boldly stated that by now the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Chairman Wontumi should have been arrested by now for mining in forest reserves. Amaliba called on Morris Donkoh to get Wontumi arrested. Amaliba explained that this is the only way Ghanaians will believe that the NPP seek to end galamsey.
Alfred Ocansey also insisted that Wontumi based on the Lands and Minerals report, was guilty of galamsey. Mr. Ocansey wondered why the President isn’t still acting. Elvis Morris Donkoh however wasn’t pleased with the pressure given to him by Alfred Ocansey that he was not a police man to effect Amaliba. In a show of power, he stated that the host and Amaliba can also tender in their evidence to the police and get Wontumi arrested.
