Akufo-Addo Sends Bold Message To National House Of Chiefs At Manhyia Over Galamsey

Galamsey has gradually emerged as the most talked about activity. President Akufo-Addo on his assumption of office promised to put his presidency on the line to curb galamsey. Sadly, after 5 years, the country can be said to have gone worse from how it was in 2017. The President has launched a number of raids on galamsey sites and yet the fight is gradually being lost.

President Akufo-Addo today, Wednesday, October 5, 2022 met with the National House of Chiefs under the leadership of Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II. Along a number of other chiefs President Akufo-Addo challenged them to assist him win this fight against galamsey.

The president explained that 80% of Ghana lands are under their control. He noted that since taking office he has made it an effort to fight galamsey. He however admitted that he is yet to get the results he needed and added that it even cost him votes in the last election.

According to Akufo-Addo he has been laughed at for saying he will put his presidency on the line. He boldly stated that he remains committed to fighting to end galamsey. He called for support from the chiefs because they are the immediate custodians of the lands. The president noted that the biggest thing he needs now is neutrality from the chiefs. He called for them to take out partisanship and help him win the galamsey fight.

“Take out partisan politics out of the fight against galamsey. No one should seek to exploit for political gain. The progress of this nation depends on all fellow Ghanaians. I have said it before. We are not against mining but we do not support mining that destroys our nation. I ask all of you to join the fight against galamsey. We have to win that fight” President Akufo-Addo said.

The President is expected to have a private session with the chiefs as he opens up to them on what is required to once and for all stop this canker. Many are however pessimistic that this will yield any fruits. Some say the President lacks the political will to prosecute those around him who are involved in galamsey. Can this consensus with chiefs and MMDCEs yield fruits and end galamsey?
