Did Akufo-Addo Lie That “Yɛ Te Sika So? – Prof Gyampo Quizzes

A Lecturer at the University of Ghana Professor Ransford Gyampo has quizzed whether President Akufo-Addo lied that Ghanaians are sitting on money (yɛte sika so). He also quizzed if the money Ghanaians are sitting on is not enough to tackle Ghana’s economic crisis.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday, 1st October 2022, he wrote;

“Mentally Retarded inflation- Is the money we are sitting on, suddenly not enough to tackle our economic miserization? Did the President lie that “y3 te sika so? Covid and Ukraine-Russian conflict, cannot affect us more than the rest of Africa.”

Prof Gyampo in a separate post remarked that a reading of the Hobbesian account of the generation of the Leviathan, tells us why a government is instituted. It is not to explain problems but to solve them. Being erudite in telling us why we are where we are, is mis-governance!

Background

Prof Gyampo’s comment comes as a background to President Akufo-Addo’s famous quote during his campaign before winning the election 2016. The President said; “Ghana ayɛ mmɔbɔ dodo, yɛte sika so nso ɛkɔm de yɛn.” This literally translate into “Ghana is pitiable, we are sitting on money yet we are starving.

Following Akufo-Addo’s second term in office, Ghana’s economy is in shambles and a bailout from IMF is even underway. The government attributes the hardships to the effect of COVID-19 and the Russian -Ukraine.
