According to TV3’s Johnnie Hughes, he was invited by the government for an important meeting but he failed to attend due to some strong reasons.
Johnnie Hughes explained that the meeting was centred on how the media can help in the fight against galamsey or illegal mining.
“Those who are calling us to discuss the galamsey are the same people involved in it. I have mentioned anyone’s name but look at how our cocoa farms have become”.
” Just look at how the illegal mining activities have destroyed the farms, now making the crops filled with cyanide. When you are asked to arrest them and cease their assets, then you do your things”.
“When you go to the mining sites, there are money, cyanide, mercury, gold, excavators. But you only declare the excavators. Where are the rest of the things that you cease?”
” I decided not to attend that meeting because our cocoa is affected by cyanide. The communities used to depend on their rivers but some water bodies are now bad due to galamsey”.
“I have a leaked video of a supposed District Chief Executive who is allegedly into galamsey and when he is arrested, he would pretend as If he is fighting against the galamsey but he is part. So how can I attend such meetings?”
Is Johnnie Hughes justified for not honouring the invitation for the fight against the galamsey?
What are your thoughts on the ongoing discussion?
