On Friday, September 23, 2022, Johnnie Hughes was joined by George Ayisi, the PRO for NADMO, and Murtala Mohammed, the MP for Tamale Central. The panelists disagreed with each other on a number of topics relating to wages and domestic production in the nation.
Murtala Mohammed started by talking about the pay of retired university professors. Murtala claims to have reliable information to support the assertion that these retired professors receive 7000 cedis annually.
Murtala Mohammed lamented this and claimed that the NDC fared better under their rule than what was taking place at the moment. He stated that the NDC has been the best government for investing in education, other than the Nkrumah administration.
Murtala said that because the field isn’t respected, he isn’t surprised that even professors get paid less. He described how Paul Adom Otchere made fun of him because he was a teacher.
Murtala claimed that Paul’s slurs against him stemmed solely from the fact that he was a teacher. Then Johnnie Hughes distanced himself, claiming he was unaware that Paul had made fun of Murtala Mohammed for being a teacher or had made fun of teachers in general.
He urged Murtala to disregard Paul and concentrate on the issue of the plight of teachers. It is true that Murtala visited the Good Evening Ghana studios a few months ago, but he was disappointed not to run into Paul.
Murtala used the opportunity to criticize the journalist for his reporting style. Paul berated the MP and claimed he doesn’t blame him because he is a teacher and is ignorant of laws and elections during a later episode of the program.
When Berla Mundi said that Murtala was daring Paul to invite him to his show and have a one-on-one conversation with him, Murtala responded on New Day. Sadly, we never had this one-on-one conversation.
The reason why teachers are among the lowest paid professions is still a mystery. Many students progress through these teachers and begin making six figures. Some even receive political appointments and make more money than our lecturers and teachers despite doing less work.
Does the country have the wrong priorities or is it just trying its best? Why do you think teachers aren’t respected when they hold the keys to a better future for all?
