Kwame Nkrumah Lived The System And Experienced How The Masses Lived

Kwame Nkrumah came from a poor background and never knew anybody although he was a good student.

Kwame Nkrumah lived the system, experienced how the masses lived. Tasted what the ordinary people taste everyday. It was through providence he gained admission to Lincoln University at age of 26.

Student life, was not easy for him. He lived on stipends from the scholarship he had and had to work at library and do assignments for his course mates to make ends meet.

He had planned to become a journalist but lack of funds would not allow him. Divinely, he had to do another degree in theology and Masters in Education. He had his First degree at the age of 30years and Masters at age of 33.

Fast forward, Nkrumah because of the experience he had had in of Pan Africanism, was invited by Ako Adjei to join the UGCC when it was formed in August 1947. He had hesitated, but accepted the challenge.

The reason why he was invited was that they needed a full time person to run the political party they had formed. Those who formed the party were the “Intelligensia” (lawyers, business men, etc) and had no time as busy people for the day to day running of the political party, thus Nkrumah. These group had felt that they were the ‘heir apparent’ when the colonial masters eventually leave.

Nkrumah had felt, the people who should rule are the ordinary Ghanaians called the “masses”. The working committee of UGCC felt, their approach to independence from colonial rule should be gradual thus “self government in the shortest possible time” while Nkrumah felt independence should be immediate thus “Self government now”.

After 1948 disturbances, the commission setup by the colonial masters, made bare certain revelations. It was through the proceedings and report, everybody got to know that Nkrumah had a document titled “The Circle” which had a greater agenda of Nkrumah Uniting West Africa and subsequently Africa.

It was through the commission Nkrumah admitted, that UGCC was part of those who orchestrated the disturbances, a position the leadership of UGCC vehemently opposed. Nkrumah and UGCC eventually divorced. He formed C.P.P.

As at 1948, Nkrumah was 39years of age. After the report of the 1948 disturbances, another commission was formed to draft a constitution. Surprisingly, the members that formed the commission were made up of only the “intelligensia” and CHIEFS, who had been used by the colonial masters as indirect rulers. There was no member that represented the “masses” -the ordinary people.

Nkrumah, per his background, his conviction had always been for the “masses”. He had lived it and know how it feel to be an ordinary citizen. He had lived poverty so could relate to what the ordinary citizen go through day and night.

Aside he identifying with the “masses”, he was also a youth. The “Intelligensia” and CHIEFS, who also felt were ‘heir apparents’, when the colonial masters leave, were representing the older folks.

Nkrumah, with the help of, Gbedemah, Ako Adjei, Kofi Baako, Kojo Botsio etc., Ghanaian youth, market women, Farmers Association, Trade Union etc using C.P.P won majority of the first election in Gold coast, 1951. Gold coast became Ghana and the rest is history.

Ghana Today

Ghana is now at a cross road. The youth, market women, farmers, ordinary Ghanaians, Trade unions, lawyers, doctors, engineers, musicians, etc have always been to the rescue of this Nation when she needed them most.

Ghana is at the cross road because foreign powers, like our colonial masters did with our chiefs, are indirect rulers of our people.

Foreign powers, though they say they stand for democracy, and believe in freedom of expression, do not want people of Ghana to express themselves freely when it came to our economy.

Foreign powers, though they say are the apostles of democracy, and believe in freedom of expression, would not want the people of Ghana, express themselves freely in what they learn, what they eat, what to buy, who to associate with and to determine their destiny.

Foreign powers, though they say are the custodians of democracy and believe in freedom of expression, but would manipulate who becomes our ruler. Would manipulate how we think.

If their democracy is only about us speaking, voting, demonstrating freely but doesn’t have the freedom to our economy, i.e what to grow, eat, buy, learn, etc while not hurting anybody, then the democracy they are preaching to us is suspect.

Let us watch out Ghanaians and in general as Africans, because these foreign powers are not champions of democracy but dictators disguised as democrats.

This is a call to rekindle the spirit, Nkrumah and all who worked tirelessly to make Ghana and other part of Africa political Independent, to become Economic Independent. Time is not on our side. We act now or we perish in perpetuity.
