Ghana has a little over 2 years to go for her national elections. Even with 2 years to go the political tempo is rising as the 2 biggest political parties get ready to slug it out. For the opposition National Democratic Congress, many feel their work is a little bit easy as John Mahama is leading in polls to lead the party. For the ruling New Patriotic Party, it will be a tight contest as many big wigs have showed interest in contesting.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is one of such candidates who looks likely to contest. Bawumia this week attended the swearing in ceremony of the new president of Kenya, William Ruto. William Ruto beat his closest rival Raila Odinga in the polls that eventually ended up at the Supreme Court. The Vice President took advantage of his visit to Kenya to grant an interview with KTN News in Kenya. He spoke about his digitalization drive and how he hopes it will change Ghana.
The host mentioned the upcoming elections in 2024 and questioned if Bawumia intends to contest like many Ghanaians are suggesting. Interestingly, Bawumia gave an a great answer. Perhaps many thought because he was outside he will speak his mind but he chose to stick to the principles of his party to wait till the campaigning period is open.
Bawumia told the host that for now he isn’t looking at 2024 but rather focused on helping president Akufo-Addo to deliver. He noted that he needs a record if he wants to contest and so working to get a good record before then. “Right now I am focused on helping my boss fulfil his vision. We don’t have enough time for thinking about 2024 right now. If you get to 2024 and you don’t have a record you have nothing to campaign about. We don’t know what the future holds but we will focus on the work for now” Bawumia said.
Bawumia looks set to come off against Alan Kyerematen and Kennedy Agyapong in one of the most heated contest for flagbearer. Many feel this is Bawumia’s time to contest but will his record ensure him a victory and will Ghanaians support the vision he has in mind?
