It seems a lot of people are not enthused about the comeback of John Mahama. But they don’t have a point. Mahama has not exhausted his allowed constitutional mandate. So he is eligible to contest as a president again. I know people will come and insult me under this write-up but I don’t mind. I am speaking about the rule of law and not politics. So let’s speak to the facts and ignore politics.
There is this issue that is dominating the airwaves and I don’t see why people should be making a lot of noise about it. It’s just a simple matter that is being blown out of proportion. Former President Mahama in an interview with Alfred Ocansey on TV3 said that all the benefits due him as a former president are not forthcoming. He said he is paying for the rent of his office, his electricity bills, fuel and other costs himself. He said this in response to an allegation made by the Bono regional chairman of the NPP that Mahama was paid about 14 million cedis as exgratia.
Now all communicators of the NPP are coming after him for making such outrageous statements. They are accusing him of peddling falsehoods. They should just bring evidence of payments made to the former president and let this matter be settled at once. Let’s not play politics with this issue.
Also, Allotey Jacobs a former Central Regional chairman of the NDC has said during a panel discussion on Peace FM that Mahama’s comeback is dangerous. He went on to say that He is just playing politics with the galamsey issue. I don’t see a problem with what Mahama said if foreigners who are destroying our lands in the name of galamsey are being set free while Ghanaians are being imprisoned. The law must be applied equally. So if he says he will free Ghanaians imprisoned for engaging in galamsey, it is not out of place at all. My problem with that statement is that it seems to give people the right to engage in galamsey which is bad. That aside, there is nothing wrong with what the former president said.
Allotey always uses any chance he gets to berate the former president. Allotey Jacobs is also to be blamed for whatever happened wrongly during the administration of the NDC. He has been a part of the problem. He should leave the former president alone.
